For other walks like offtrack I have photocopied and printed double sided the relevant sections of topo maps for the walks I'm doing and then laminated in 80gsm pockets. By photocopying I keep the scaling. Before laminating I mark the grid references if they've been cut off. I still take the original big map with me but it stays in my pack as it's only really for emergencies. I'm very OTT with my maps! Even if the trail is well marked like the Overland.

Instead of scanning, I’ve actually taken apart Chapman’s books and laminated the pages I need, so they’re pretty light. I just stumbled across this article and remembered I never did send you our trip report from the Port Davey and South Coast adventure! I'll chase it up if you're still interested.
Four girls started the trek in Spring 2011 (I think?!) a time when even the rangers don't venture in (bad researching Caitie!!) two were flown out at Malleleuca and two carried on.
Tough does not even come close to describing those two weeks... but one of my greatest adventures so far. My darling Dad also got to share some of it - dropping us off and hiking in for the first night, then arriving at the end with a big cuddle.

Hi Frank!<br

I have competed in 3 Oxfam Trailwalkers which is 100km of bush tracks over 48hrs. This did need training. I read than any muscles you have will begin to degrade after 3 days of non-use - this is why your legs get so thin and wobbly if you're sick in bed for a week with the flu.
I trained twice a week by walking 25km each time. This takes 4 hours over fairly level ground. 3 months of this meant I had no soreness issues on the events and was very familiar with the feelings of tiredness and was not distressed when they inevitably came on. This is muscle fitness without any real cardio vascular exercise so the real athletes would power past me on the climbs but I was never in need of rest stops.

I am 57 years old and have never been to the gym nor worked out but am blessed with a metabolism and good eating habits that have made my 6 foot/82kg frame easy to maintain. We don't have a problem with vision on the track. The balance pockets are too the side so they don't seem to effect what we see.
