We join the second part of Caitie and Lauren’s winter Overland Track trip where they have reached Kia Ora Hut after spending three days on the track from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair.
To read about their adventures at Waldheim, Waterfall Valley, Windemere and New Pelion Huts, head over to Part One – The Overland Track – Winter trip with Caitie and Lauren first.
New Pelion Hut to Kia Ora Hut – Monday 26th June
Coal fires are the best invention!! We are in Kia Ora Hut tonight and have stoked the fire so that it is very warm and cosy inside, with snow falling outside. Great walk today from New Pelion. We started through rainforest with a nice little waterfall along the way, with a fairly hidden entrance, but well worth the look. A steep ascent to Pelion Gap followed, causing us to swelter in our thermal layers!
Planning to hike the Overland Track in Winter? Looking to bushwalk from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair? If you have ever wondered what the conditions are like “off season” on this famous World Heritage journey, then this article is for you. Welcome Caitie Moncur who has been kind enough to share her journal notes from a very recent trip. After months of planning and preparation, and one final night of packing, weighing, unpacking and repacking, the time has finally come. We are Caitie and Lauren, 26 and 25 years old, best friends since we were 3 years old and we are about to take on the challenge that is The Overland Track… in Winter!
Planning how to hike the Overland Track from outside Australia can be complicated. We met Alan via the blog when he wanted to hike the Overland Track and only had a few “spare” days on a flying visit to Australia to see his daughter. We ended up hiking the Overland Track, from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair, in five days with him.
How many nights to spend hiking the Overland Track is a common question. Do you take five, six or seven nights to walk from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair? What are the best number of days to hike the Overland Track?
We spend a lot of time planning our food for each hiking trip.
We like a lot of variety and different tastes.
We take fresh and dried food, we like to plan our menu.
After reading Tony and Linda’s Antipodean Adventure 2010, we are not sure why. It all seems like a waste of time and effort.
Tony and Linda in their short post about hiking the Overland Track list the food they took for the trip. No mucking around, this is a simple menu.
Breakfast (6 days) - muesli bar & Berocca tablet (makes fizzy orange drink with vitamins)
