Walking the Never Never – “Fun” in the Tasmanian wilderness
There is an area in Tasmania between the Walls of Jerusalem and the Overland Track called the Never Never.
We have walked it twice and occasionally share our GPS track and waypoints with readers who are planning the walk.
The tricky bit is finding a particular spot where a log crosses the Mersey River. It is the simplest route and took a lot of searching to find it on our first trip (without a waypoint)
Just looking back, this article Lake Meston Hut to Kia Ora Hut via the “Never Never” gives the full rundown, and has some pictures, a map and the waypoints.
We were pleased this week to receive some feedback on the track and thought it might be of interest:

Hey there. My son and I have just got back from the same hike you gave me the GPS readings for.
I will reply in full later but I think I have been mentally unhinged by the day spent in the Never Never. I always wondered why it got that name. Now I have a bit of an idea. We did spend a day in knee deep water, knee deep mud and trees that seemed to sweep me off my feet. Regularly.
We ended up with headlamps on standing in the dark in a forest with tea tree slapping in my face. Somehow we made it and I must thank you for the GPS download!
Was a tough day by the sound of it. Hopefully we will get more details and pictures in a trip report to share. (once the author recovers his mental facilities!)
What sort of “difficult” situations have you found yourself in out in the bush?
What is the toughest day hiking or bushwalking you have encountered? Did it stop you or are you still keen?
Shoot us a reply below, we would love to hear about your adventures or mishaps!
